iPhone 13 tipped to feature a smaller notch, Wi-Fi 6E, LiDAR sensors, and more

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The upcoming iPhone 13 series is likely to support Wi-Fi 6E
  • It will also come with a smaller notch and better depth-sensing capabilities due to D-ToF and LiDAR sensors.
  • Apple is also expected to increase the number of sensors on the iPhone 13 camera.

iPhone 13 leaked specifications indicate that the handset would come with improved depth-sensing capabilities and feature Wi-Fi 6E support. Unlike the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 13 release date is expected to be sometime in September 2021. A new report from MacRumors suggests that the iPhone 13 will be the first iPhone to come with Wi-Fi 6E. An earlier leak told us that the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra would be the only smartphone of the Galaxy S21 series to support Wi-Fi 6E functionality. Alternatively, another report out of Digitimes tells us that all three iPhone 13 models will come with LiDAR sensors.

Traditional 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ax routers can interface with devices over two bands; 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz. Wi-Fi 6E adds a third 6GHz band that improves upon the latter with higher throughput and lower latency. With Wi-Fi 6E, the iPhone 13 can hit speeds of up to 3.6Gb/s, allowing users stream at never-before-seen speeds. However, one will require a router that supports the band to take full advantage of the functionality. As of now, Wi-Fi 6E routers are few in number, but we can expect to see that change by the time the iPhone 13 launches.

The LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) module made its debut on the iPad Pro and has since made its way to the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. This time around, all three (or four) iPhone 13 variants will have one alongside a D-ToF (Direct time-of-flight) sensor. If both sensors work in tandem with each other, the iPhone 13 series should have some impressive depth-sensing capabilities. Lastly, Apple is also expected to ramp up the number of sensors on the iPhone 13 series, though the actual number may vary by the SKU. In all likelihood, the maxed-out iPhone 13 Pro Max (tentative) could come with four rear camera sensors in a square-shaped pattern. Other expected iPhone 13 specs include a smaller notch, a 120Hz refresh-rate screen, and an upgraded ultra-wide-angle lens.

Microsoft unveils Windows 11, a more polished OS

A messy (but surprisingly stable) leak probably wasn't the way Microsoft wanted to introduce the world to Windows 11, but that didn't stop the company from launching its new OS today with a ton of fanfare. After all, a new version of Windows doesn't come around very often, right? So here's what's up with Windows 11: Like we saw in the leaked build, it's clearly evolving everything we saw in Windows 10. But there's an extra sheen of polish that's nice to see after spending six years with the last version. The new OS will be a free upgrade for Windows 10 users and start rolling out "this holiday". And yes, the centered task bar we saw last week is still, well, front and center. For many users, I'd imagine it'd be a somewhat disconcerting change to break a tradition that started with Windows 95. But after playing with the beta build for over a week now, it's a change I've come to appreciate. (You can also push the taskbar back to ...
